Hearing from other interns has made me realise the breadth of opportunities available, as my experiences have been completely different to that of my peers — giving me an indication of the experiences available within this graduate program.

My first graduate rotation landed me within the Downer ITS department. Once arriving at the downer office in the morning, a typical day for me involves programming the current project, planning the required road closures, processing quality assurance results, and partaking in contract and planning meetings. At times I was also required at the site for the start of the night shift to conduct a toolbox safety briefing, ensure each site is operating and to identify and solve any issues which arise. I also had the opportunity to implement practical skills in the installation of major items, including gantries and camera poles.

My internship at Downer has given me insight into the diversity of this company. Hearing from other interns has made me realise the breadth of opportunities available, as my experiences have been completely different to that of my peers — giving me an indication of the experiences available within this graduate program.

For incoming interns, the one piece of advice I would give is to make sure you understand everything happening in your project — ask lots of questions and don’t be afraid to give everything a go. Chances are the next project you go to will be completely different, giving you a huge number of learning opportunities to take advantage of.
