I was commissioned to the Policy and Legislative Team. During my internship, I completed research on Māori interests and frameworks across government agencies.  I also contributed to the planning for important mahi relating to the implementation of certain sections of the new Data and Statistics Act 2022. A highlight in working with my team was our team meetings, we would talk about random facts and do the Stuff quiz every day at 3:00 pm.

The Pacific staff were super welcoming, they kept in touch, and they also made sure all of the interns were doing okay. The workplace culture at Stats NZ was very welcoming, even when it was busy, the people are calm and relaxed.  Stats NZ has a wonderful work environment.

What advice would you give future interns?

Confidence is key, don’t be shy to ask your questions, if you think it’s dumb, trust me it is not. Just go for it! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, be open and have the courage to keep going.
